The 1-2-3 RESET™ Guidebook:
A Trauma-Sensitive Approach to Behavioral Intervention
1-2-3 RESET™ is a valuable resource for teachers to help students thrive. As school-based occupational therapists, we’ve attentively listened to your concerns about nurturing students’ emotional well-being and supporting regulation in the classroom. We empathize with the unique challenges you face.
While other programs may focus on topics like talking about feelings and teaching social skills from a cognitive perspective, we haven’t found any that specifically address the foundation of these skills- body-based regulation. Recognizing a need for a comprehensive, easily adaptable approach, we’ve taken the initiative to bridge this crucial gap. Our goal is to leverage our expertise to equip you with practical strategies you can seamlessly integrate into your teaching methods, fostering environments where every student can thrive.

How Does 1-2-3 RESET™ Work?
This Tier 1 intervention curriculum can be used alone or in conjunction with your school’s social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum. We suggest implementing 1-2-3 RESET™ before SEL lessons to set students up for success by being regulated and ready to learn from the SEL lessons being taught.
The 8-week lessons in this self regulation book can be carried out by teachers, occupational therapy practitioners, social workers, mental health professionals, or other professionals who have an understanding of trauma-sensitive work. The lessons are written from the teacher’s perspective but information for best practice implementation is addressed for both related service providers and teachers.
The lessons consistently start with two regulating body-based activities: Mindful Listening and the 1-2-3 RESET™ breaks sequence. Throughout the eight-lesson sequence, students learn how their brains work, practice identifying sensations in their bodies, explore how those sensations connect to emotions, and discover strategies to help themselves regulate. By reflecting on their body sensations, they start to recognize when they are feeling stressed, nervous, frustrated, tired, or ready to learn. Becoming aware of how their bodies feel and identifying when and how to implement regulation strategies helps set their nervous systems up for success in the classroom!
